Founded in 1994, the Maine Composites Alliance is a non-profit group promoting Maine’s leadership in the international composite industry. MCA enhances the competitiveness of Maine’s existing composite industry and its members by providing opportunities for new commercial ventures, and by providing education and training for members and their employees. The Composite Technology Centers provide incubator services to Maine’s composite industry.
Stephen Von Vogt will lead the Maine Composites Alliance as its new Executive Director. The immediate focus of efforts for MCA and CTC will be developing business opportunities and workforce training for Maine’s composite industry. MCA and CTC will focus on developing opportunities in five major areas of promise in Maine’s composite industries. These include:
• Alternative energy (wind and tidal).
• Pollution control systems (including clean coal technologies).
• Commercial and government contracting (commercial and military boatbuilding technology, vessel components and structures).
• Infrastructure (Including bridges and marine infrastructure).
• Traditional composite boatbuilding.
Von Vogt has extensive experience in the composite and boatbuilding industries, founding several Maine marine composite companies. Von Vogt led an effort that secured an Office of Naval Research contract to develop a high-speed composite craft for Navy SEALS, securing over $14M in federal funding. He was instrumental in a recent grant of $14.6M from the US Department of Labor for economic and workforce development to support the composites industry in Maine. (The grant led to the formation of the North Star Alliance in Maine.)
Von Vogt also served as past Chairman of Maine Built Boats and recently served as Industry Coordinator for the North Star Alliance.
Von Vogt is currently a principal of both Maine Marine Composites, a Portland-based composites integrator for the Maine composite industry, and US Windblade, a Bath-based manufacturer of composite replacement blades for the wind turbine market.
